Our De Lune Journey

De Lune was born out of necessity.

I was in college and missing classes regularly due to crippling period pain. On a few unlucky occasions I got my period cramps unexpectedly during class, and those days were simply disastrous. I have a vivid memory of sitting on the floor in the corner of my Chemistry lab (during a timed experiment, mind you), crying and hugging my knees because I couldn’t stand up. The perplexed TA had no idea what to do with me.

So of course I began carrying all manner of over-the-counter painkillers with me wherever I went – something I had never done before. Tylenol, Advil, Motrin, Midol… they were my crutch. And this bugged me.

I was studying Environmental Engineering at the time and was hyper-aware of the environmental ramifications of large-scale pharmaceutical industry. I knew that medications like these could potentially harm entire ecosystems once they found their way into soil and water bodies (which they inevitably do). Not to mention, I considered myself a conscious consumer, and examined all the ingredients of everything I ate to ensure that they were safe and healthy for me. I was frustrated that I could not do the same for the medicine I was consuming.

My breaking point came when I suffered a bad reaction to a pain medication that I was taking (I won’t mention the name here). I was light-headed, nauseous, and faint, and my heart was racing so much that I couldn’t go to class. I ended up in the hospital, and that day I decided to find an alternative solution to my period pain.

I needed a product without any negative side effects (to myself or to the environment). A product that treated my crippling pain without all the synthetic ingredients. A product that I could feel good about taking every single month.

It didn’t exist.

But my dear reader, I am as stubborn as they come. So when I started exploring alternatives, I realized I wasn't alone. It turns out nearly everyone I knew who experienced period pain was keen on finding a natural way to effectively provide relief.

Starting from nothing but an idea, my wonderful co-founders and I began our journey of researching, testing, developing, manufacturing, and distributing our first product, the De Lune menstruation tonic. We were proud of this product because it offered an alternative to the conventional painkillers that many (including me) struggle with – an alternative that causes no harm to consumers or environment.

As we went on to sell thousands of bottles of the original De Lune formula, we received feedback from hundreds of women encouraging us to continue innovating. While they loved our original product, many users were looking for something that could more easily adapt to their lifestyles, with smaller, more manageable doses.

Along the way, we also continued learning from physicians, herbalists, and nutritionists. Instead of relying solely on published research material, we went directly to the source, talking with experts at leading universities to see which components would alleviate period pain more effectively.

We wrapped our customer feedback and new findings into a new, concentrated product: De Lune. This product is for everyone out there who gets chronic period pain like me, and who wants to treat it in the most wholesome and sustainable way possible. We can’t wait to hear what you think.

With all my love,

Mimi
Co-founder, De Lune
